Twenty eclipses fall between January 2027 and December 2030: ten solar and ten lunar. Three of the solar eclipses are total, three annular, and four partial; three of the lunar eclipses are total. A penumbral eclipse is a slight shading of the Moon that most people do not notice; none of the three in 2027 is worth planning around. Greatest-eclipse instants are rounded to the minute.

Which eclipses are worth travelling for?

Three. The August 2, 2027 total eclipse over Egypt is the longest on land this century at 6 minutes 23 seconds and has the best weather odds. The July 22, 2028 total eclipse passes directly over Sydney with 3 minutes 48 seconds of totality in the early afternoon, the rare case of a major city inside the path. The November 25, 2030 total eclipse is shorter and low in the sky, but it crosses Windhoek and Durban at sunrise and South Australia at sunset, and it is the last total solar eclipse before 2031. The annular eclipses of January 2028 and June 2030 are worth seeing if you live near the path, in Spain or Brazil for the first, Greece or Turkey for the second, but a ring eclipse does not darken the sky and does not justify a long trip.

Which eclipses can you see from home?

The lunar ones. A total lunar eclipse is visible from an entire hemisphere at once, needs no glasses, and lasts long enough to watch with a cup of coffee. The New Year's Eve 2028 eclipse serves Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia; the June 2029 eclipse, the deepest of the decade, serves the Americas, Europe, and Africa; and the December 2029 eclipse reaches almost everywhere except the Pacific. For North Americans, the partial solar eclipse of January 14, 2029 covers up to 87 percent of the Sun around midday and is the deepest solar eclipse visible from the mainland United States in this span; the January 26, 2028 annular eclipse shows a small partial phase from the eastern states.

Why do eclipses come in pairs six months apart?

The Moon's orbit is tilted about 5 degrees to Earth's orbit around the Sun, so most new and full moons pass above or below the line between Sun and Earth and nothing happens. Twice a year, about six months apart, the Sun lines up with the points where the two orbits cross, and for a few weeks either side any new moon gives a solar eclipse and any full moon a lunar one. That is why each year's eclipses cluster into two seasons, and why a solar eclipse is almost always accompanied by a lunar eclipse two weeks before or after it. The June 1, 2030 annular and the June 15, 2030 partial lunar eclipse are one such pair.
