Where is the path of totality?
The path is about 170 km wide, narrower than most, because the Sun is near its largest in late November and the Moon only just covers it. The shadow touches Earth at sunrise in the South Atlantic about 780 km east of St Helena at 05:16 UTC, reaches the Namibian coast at about 05:20 UTC and passes over Windhoek, crosses the Kgalagadi district of Botswana at about 05:26 UTC, then runs across South Africa through the Northern Cape, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal, leaving the coast near Durban at about 05:37 UTC. Lesotho lies inside the path's edge. After nearly three hours over the Indian Ocean the shadow makes landfall on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia at about 08:20 UTC, races across the Flinders Ranges, the far northwest corner of New South Wales, and southern Queensland, and lifts off Earth at sunset about 140 km north of Toowoomba at 08:25 UTC. Totality reaches Streaky Bay on the Eyre Peninsula at about 18:50 Australian Central Daylight Time (1 minute 56 seconds), Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges at about 18:52 ACDT (1 minute 41 seconds), and Broken Hill, New South Wales at about 18:53 ACDT (1 minute 47 seconds). Tibooburra, in the far northwest of New South Wales, sees about 1 minute 7 seconds at 19:24 Australian Eastern Daylight Time, and in southern Queensland, which does not observe daylight saving, Cunnamulla and Miles see 1 minute 14 seconds and 1 minute 31 seconds at about 18:25 AEST with the Sun on the horizon. Adelaide sits just outside the path and sees a very deep partial eclipse at sunset. Who sees a partial eclipse?
Southern Africa from Angola and Zambia southward, Madagascar, the islands of the southern Indian Ocean, Indonesia, all of Australia, and part of Antarctica. Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Canberra see a partial eclipse in the late afternoon and at sunset. Eclipse glasses are required for every partial phase and, inside the path, for everything except the two or three minutes of totality itself.
Why is totality short?
The Moon reaches perigee on the same day, November 25, so its disc is large, but Earth is only six weeks from perihelion and the Sun's disc is near its largest too. The Moon wins by a narrow margin, magnitude 1.047, which is why the path is only 170 km wide and totality peaks at 3 minutes 44 seconds instead of the five or six minutes of the 2027 and 2028 eclipses.
