August 12, 2026: a total eclipse and the best Perseid night of the decade
·Postscript, September 4, 2026. Both events happened as predicted. The Moon's shadow ran east to west from northern Siberia over the pole to Greenland, crossed western Iceland in mid afternoon (Reykjavik reached totality at 17:48 local time, about four hours before sunset), and reached northern Spain about an hour before sunset. Greatest eclipse and longest totality, 2 minutes 18 seconds, fell about 45 km off the west coast of Iceland. NASA flew a WB-57 along the shadow over the North Atlantic to stretch its view of the corona toward three minutes, and Spain opened 660 official viewing sites for the crowds. Two things worth planning around landed on the same date this year. A total solar eclipse crossed Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain on August 12, and the Perseids peaked within a day of it with a new moon keeping the sky dark. Most years you get one or the other, and usually with the moon in the way.

The path runs across eastern Greenland, western Iceland, northern Spain, and a small strip of northeastern Portugal. Spain gets the strange version: a totally eclipsed Sun sitting low in the sky near sunset, which is a harder shot for photographers and a better one for everybody else.

Then the meteors, the same night
The IMO puts the 2026 Perseid maximum at 02:00 to 04:00 UTC on August 13, the small hours of the night of August 12 to 13, with the nights either side worth using too. The reason this year matters is the moon: the peak falls beside a new moon, so nothing is washing out the faint streaks. In 2027 the same shower runs into a roughly 87 percent waxing gibbous moon and you only keep the brightest few.
A Perseid peak beside a new moon does not come again until 2045. If you only chase one shower in the next few years, this is the one.

If you are nowhere near the eclipse path
Most people reading this will be, and the meteors are the half that travels. The eclipse is a narrow strip of the planet on one afternoon; the Perseids are visible across the whole northern hemisphere for two nights. Plan for the meteors, and watch the eclipse on a feed.
The Sun is also worth a look in the days around it, for an unrelated reason: solar activity is high enough right now that flares are a regular occurrence, and you can watch the disc in the wavelengths where they actually show up.

Can I see the eclipse and the Perseids on the same night?
In northern Spain or Iceland, yes, and it is the same sky a few hours apart. Totality in Spain falls close to sunset on August 12, and the Perseid rate climbs through the small hours that follow. Anywhere outside the eclipse path you still get the meteors, which are the half most people can actually act on.

The night of August 12 to 13 is the core, and the nights either side flank it well. Go after midnight local time, when the radiant is highest. You do not need equipment or a dark-sky park, just somewhere without a streetlight in your eyes, and twenty minutes for your eyes to adapt.
