How to watch the 2026 Perseids: the peak nights, hour by hour

The 2026 Perseids peak overnight on August 12-13, and there is no moon in the way. The International Meteor Organization predicts the maximum at 02:00 to 04:00 UTC on August 13, and the new moon of August 12 means the sky stays as dark as your site allows all night. A Perseid peak beside a new moon does not come again until 2045. This page is the practical half: when to go out where you live, where to face, and what an honest hourly count looks like.

The short version.

Go out after local midnight on the night of August 12-13. Pick the darkest spot you can reach, keep every streetlight out of your line of sight, face roughly northeast, lean back, and give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes. No equipment. The nights of August 11-12 and 13-14 are worth using too; the shower falls off slowly, not like a switch.

South of the equator the radiant sits low or below the horizon, and the show thins out fast with latitude. Peak predictions also differ between models by some hours, which is normal for meteor showers; the practical answer is the whole night, with the last dark hour usually the best of it.

Where to look.

Face roughly northeast and take in as much sky as you can. The radiant, the point the trails trace back to, sits in Perseus underneath the W of Cassiopeia, low in the northeast at nightfall and high overhead by dawn. Do not stare at the radiant itself: meteors near it look short and stubby, and the longer, better ones show up 40 to 60 degrees away from it. Early in the evening, while the radiant is still low, you see fewer meteors but you can catch earthgrazers, slow trails that skim along the horizon.

What you will actually see.

The Perseids are quoted at a ZHR of 100, and that number is an idealized ceiling: one observer, a perfectly dark sky, the radiant straight overhead. Under a real dark rural sky in the best hours, roughly one meteor a minute is a good night. From a bright suburb you keep only the bright ones, a few per quarter hour, which is exactly what the new moon helps with this year: everything faint that your sky can show, you get. The IMO's 2026 outlook expects a somewhat quieter background than usual, and it also lists a possible brush with an old dust filament in the early UTC hours of August 13 that would add meteors if it happens. Nobody can promise a specific count; the conditions are the part that is locked in, and they are as good as this shower gets.

The checklist.

A reclining chair or a blanket, so your neck survives an hour of looking up. Warm layers, because standing still at 3 am is colder than the forecast reads. Phone face down, brightness low; every look at a bright screen resets your dark adaptation, and 20 to 30 minutes is what your eyes need to reach full sensitivity. Red light if you need light. Confirm your sky is actually dark with tonight's moon page; this week the answer is yes by default.

The eclipse, the same date.

The new moon that keeps the Perseid sky dark is the same moon that crosses the Sun hours earlier: a total solar eclipse over Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain on the afternoon of August 12, UTC. While you are out there.

Venus hangs low in the west in the first hour after sunset and sets before the meteor hours begin. By the last hour before sunrise, Mars and Saturn are up as naked-eye objects, and Mercury and Jupiter sit very low near the eastern horizon. None of it needs optics either.

No. The naked eye is the right instrument; meteors cross too much sky too fast for optics. Bring a chair you can lean back in, turn your phone brightness down, and give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adapt.
